The Yoorrook Justice Commission has published the Report into Victoria’s Child Protection and Criminal Justice Systems, tabled in Parliament on 5 September 2023.
The report makes 46 recommendations for reform, detailing the extensive systemic injustice, racism, discriminatory laws and policy failures that have, and continue to, cause harm to First Peoples’.
The Commission held ongoing inquiries into the child protection and criminal justice system in 2023, with 27 hearing days, 84 witnesses and 12 roundtable discussions across Victoria.
The report is a result of extensive truth-telling, the Commission received over 100 submissions, made five adult and youth prison visits and received 4,000 government documents in response to notices to produce evidence.
Yoorrook Justice Commission acknowledges the vital contributions of First Peoples sharing their lived experiences of these system which have provided the foundation of the report and it’s recommendations to address injustices.
