GOOD PRACTICE

The City of Frankston reported the following good practices in their response to the 2012 Victorian Local Government Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Survey and subsequent updates.

  • Flies both the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Island flags permanently above the town hall
  • Engages with Traditional Owners
  • Has a protocol for Acknowledgement of Country
  • Has an Aboriginal Advisory Committee or similar structure
  • Engages with local Aboriginal organisations
  • Engages with the Local Indigenous Network
  • Engages with the local Reconciliation Group
  • Supports Aboriginal arts and culture by displaying artworks in Council premises, displaying artworks in public places, exhibitions, festivals, markets or concerts and by supporting local artists or performers
  • Has facilitated naming of local sites in recognition of Aboriginal people
  • Has worked with RAP’s or Traditional Owners to protect Aboriginal cultural heritage
  • Has Aboriginal specific library programs
  • Has Aboriginal-specific child and family services
  • Conducts programs specifically targeted towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people
